Forrest was named Fighter of the Year in 2002. He competed on the 1992 US Olympic Team. He made his professional boxing debut with a win over Charles Hawkins in November 1992. Vernon Forrest won the vacant IBC light welterweight title with a win over Marlon Thomas in November 1995.

He beat Ray Oliveira in November 1997 to win the vacant WBC Continental Americas welterweight title and beat Adrian Stone in August 1998 to win the vacant NABF welterweight title. Forrest won the vacant IBF welterweight title by defeating Raul Frank in May 2001 and won the WBC, lineal, and vacant The Ring welterweight titles from Shane Mosley in January 2002. His first loss was to Ricardo Mayorga in January 2003. Forrest won the vacant WBC super welterweight title by defeating Carlos Baldomir in July 2007 and won it again from Sergio Mora in September 2008 after he lost it to him in June of that year. He finished his career with a record of 41-3. Vernon Forrest was murdered on July 25, 2009 at 38 years old.
