Early Life

Justine Dupont was born on July 27, 1991, in Bordeaux, France. She started surfing when she was 11 years old.

Surfing Career

Dupont began her surfing career specializing in longboarding. From 2006 to 2008, she won three consecutive national longboard championships, and she also claimed the European surf championship in 2008. After a bit of a dry spell in 2009, Dupont was the national longboard champion again in 2010. She followed that with a European surf championship in 2011 and a win at the WQS 6000 Surf Pro in Portugal in 2012. In 2013, Dupont won her first ISA World Team title with France. Also that year, she became the first woman to surf the 15m Belharra in the French Basque Country. In 2014, Dupont won the European longboard championship and the LQS Vieux Boucau. She picked up further national longboard and national surf championships in 2015. The year after that, Dupont won the WQS 1500 Azores Airlines Pro in Portugal and the WQS 1000 Central Coast Pro in Australia. She had her biggest winning year yet in 2017, with her solo titles including the WQS 1000 Caparica Pro and the LQS Boardmasters Jeep Women's Longboard. In team competition, Dupont won the stand-up paddle European championship, the Aloha Cup World Championship, and her second career ISA World Team title. In 2018, she claimed yet another European longboard championship and also won the QS Caparica and the LQS Espinho, both in Portugal.

By 2019, Dupont was being recognized as the greatest female big wave surfer in the world. That year, she won the ISA stand-up paddle world titles in both solo and team competition, and also won the ISA longboard world team title. On top of that, Dupont won her first two XXL Awards, for Performance of the Year and Biggest Wave. She won two more XXL Awards in 2020, including her second for Performance of the Year and her first for Ride of the Year. Dupont also won the inaugural WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge in 2020. She won that competition again in 2021, and picked up XXL Awards for Performance of the Year, Ride of the Year, and Biggest Wave of the Year. In both 2022 and 2023, Dupont again won Ride of the Year and Biggest Wave of the Year, and also claimed her fourth career Performance of the Year honor in 2023. Among her other notable achievements in 2023, Dupont surfed a massive wave in the remote Cortes Bank off the coast of Southern California, and was part of the first female group of surfers to compete in the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. She returned to the Eddie in 2024. The following year, Dupont won her third career WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge. She also competed in the men's division of the event, and came in second place.

Other Activities and Appearances

In 2020, Dupont was elected as the chair of the new ISA Athletes' Commission for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. During that Olympic Games, surfing competitions were held for the first time. Dupont also served as a commentator on French television during the Games. Elsewhere, Dupont appeared on the HBO documentary television series "100 Foot Wave," about professional big wave surfer Garrett McNamara and his attempts to conquer a 100-foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal. The series premiered in the summer of 2021.

Dupont is married to world bodysurfing champion Fred David, with whom she has a son named Elio. The couple lives between the southwest of France and Nazaré, Portugal.
