She is an eight-time Olympic medalist and won a Bronze in her debut in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay in 2008. At the 2012 Olympics in London she won Gold Medals in the 200 meter freestyle, the 4×200 meter freestyle relay, and the 4×100 meter medley relay. Schmitt also won a Silver Medal in the 400 meter freestyle and a Bronze in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. She was a four time NCAA national champion in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle swimming events and helped the Bulldogs win the NCAA Division I Women's championship in 2013.
