Early Life and College Career
Sophie Cunningham was born Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham on August 16, 1996, in Columbia, Missouri. She is the daughter of Paula and Jim Cunningham, who were both athletes at the University of Missouri. Sophie became interested in martial arts as a child, and when she was six years old, she earned a black belt in taekwondo. She played basketball and volleyball at Rock Bridge High School, and when the football team's kicker suffered a season-ending ACL tear, Cunningham replaced him. Sophie attended her parents' alma mater, the University of Missouri, and played four seasons of basketball for the Tigers. She started 129 games and averaged 17 points per game.
Professional Career
During the 2019 WNBA Draft, Cunningham was the 13th overall pick, and she began playing for the Phoenix Mercury later that year. She played for the Mercury until 2024, then the team traded her to the Indiana Fever in early 2025. Sophie has gained attention for being the Fever's enforcer and was ejected from the team's June 17th game against the Connecticut Sun after she shoved Jacy Sheldon to the ground for poking Fever star Caitlin Clark in the eye. After the incident went viral, Cunningham gained hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, and sales of her jersey dramatically increased. In an article on OutKick.com, writer Bobby Burack stated, "Cunningham has more than doubled her following on TikTok and Instagram since defending Clark just two days ago. Specifically, she gained over 500,000 followers on TikTok in the first 24 hours after the incident." He added, "Cunningham is one of the few players in the WNBA to have shown any loyalty to Clark through two seasons in the league. Combine that with her good looks and charming personality — the WNBA may have just found a second star to go alongside Caitlin Clark."

Personal Life
In July 2025, Sophie was the subject of criticism after she questioned the WBNA's choices of new cities to expand to (Detroit, Philadelphia, and Cleveland). She stated, "You want to listen to your players, too. Where do they want to play? Where are they gonna get excited to play and draw fans? I do think that Miami would have been a great one … Nashville's an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity." She then said that people might not be excited to go to the cities that the league chose. The City of Detroit tweeted in response, "The last time we were home to a WNBA team (Detroit Shock) we ranked top five in attendance for five straight seasons, No. 1 in attendance for three straight seasons and set a single-game attendance record of 22,076 fans at Game 3 of the 2003 WNBA Finals. Additionally, more than 775,000 people were excited to come to Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft. Detroit is a sports town. We're sure we'll see the same excitement for the WNBA returning."
