He competed as lightweight in 1999, a middleweight from 2000 to 2011, a welterweight from 2012 to 2014, and again as a middleweight since 2014. Marquardt made his professional MMA debut in April 1999 when he defeated Mike Lee to win the World Vale Tudo Federation Lightweight Championship. He beat Jose Garcia to win the Rumble in the Rockies Lightweight Championship in June 1999. Marquardt won the Bas Rutten Invitation Lightweight Championship in August 1999 by defeating David Harris. He won the Ring of Fire Middleweight Championship by beating Anthony Washington in March 2000. Marquardt won the Pancrase Middleweight Championship in September 2000 when he defeated Shonie Carter.
