When the Los Angeles Angels (then the Anaheim Angels) won the World Series in 2002, they were owned by Disney. A year later, the company sold the team to Arte Moreno. Since Moreno took over in 2003, the Angels have only won two playoff series and have not returned to the World Series. Even worse, after the team rebranded to the Los Angeles Angels in 2016, it hasn't even had a single winning season. That includes this year, where the Angels are already guaranteed to finish below .500.
Angels fans would tell you a change was long overdue, and it looks like they're finally getting it. Moreno is selling the team. The buyer? Stan Kroenke, who now owns teams across seven different professional sports leagues.
Despite the Angels' struggles over the past quarter-century, Kroenke is purchasing the team at a record valuation of $4 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, so Kroenke should be the owner of the team by the time next season begins.

Moreno previously tried to sell the team in 2022, though he backed out of a potential deal less than a year later. Now, he's on the receiving end of a record sale.
For several seasons, the Angels had Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani on the roster. Both players are almost certain Hall of Famers. Trout is still around, but Ohtani joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2023 and then won the National League MVP in 2024 and 2025, plus World Series rings both years.
Meanwhile, the Angels have consistently been in the bottom rungs of the American League, despite multiple MVP seasons from Trout and Ohtani, before the latter left.
Could Kroenke's ownership turn things around? It certainly can't make the situation much worse. He adds the Angels to a sports portfolio that includes the Los Angeles Rams (NFL), the Denver Nuggets (NBA), the Colorado Avalanche (NHL), the Colorado Rapids (MLS), the Colorado Mammoth (National Lacrosse League), and both the men's Arsenal F.C. and women's Arsenal W.F.C. soccer teams. Multiple of Kroenke's teams have won championships with him as owner.
The NFL has rules about owners having stakes in other big four sports leagues, so the Nuggets and Avalanche are held in the name of Kroenke's wife, Ann Walton Kroenke. She's part of the Walton family that started Walmart, and has proven to be a successful business savant in her own right. The couple have a collective $22 billion net worth. With the NFL rules in place, Walton Kroenke might also wind up being the technical "owner" of the Angels, as well.
Of course, an owner is only a single component of a successful sports franchise. But when you've been suffering for as long as Angels fans have, any change is a positive one.
