Fresh Off A Career Season, Courtland Sutton Signs A $92 Million Contract

As a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Courtland Sutton is the second-longest-tenured player on the Denver Broncos. He's stressed how he wants to finish his career in the Mile High City, and his head coach, Sean Payton, believed a deal would get done at "the right time."

That time was at the start of training camp, as Sutton and the Broncos agreed to a long-term deal to keep the wide receiver in town for the long term. Sutton's four-year, $92 million extension will run through the end of the decade. It has $41 million in guaranteed money, including the $14 million Sutton will make this season as part of his previous contract (which has $13.5 million in base salary and $500,000 in a workout bonus).

Sutton's previous four-year deal was worth $60.8 million, so this is quite the raise. And it comes after his best season yet in the NFL.

Sutton had a career-high 135 targets and 81 receptions last season. He added 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns, which were both the second-highest totals of his NFL tenure. Sutton also became the go-to target of rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who the Broncos took in the first round of the 2024 draft.

That will likely continue this season, as Sutton steps up as a leader in the Broncos clubhouse. He was tops on the team in just about every statistical category last season. He'll look to keep that up even as the team added tight end Evan Engram (free agency) and receiver Pat Bryant (draft) to help bolster the offense.

Sutton missed the team's voluntary offseason workouts last year in the hopes of securing a new deal, though he did score an extra $1.5 million by reaching performance incentives during mandatory training camp. He didn't want to play this season without a new deal in place, and the Broncos worked to make it happen.

Now, Sutton has a contract that's among the top dozen largest for wide receivers. He and the Broncos will look to build on last season's growth, when the team reached the playoffs for the first time since winning the Super Bowl during the 2015 season.
