Nickle for your thoughts… You might want to get used to that phrase if the movement to abolish pennies is successful! Would you be upset if the United States government ceased using the penny? As I was setting out to write this article I tried to think of one useful function that the penny performs in society today. All I could come up with was those machines at amusement parks that turn pennies into flat stamped souvenirs. Even homeless people will give you a dirty look if you try to slip them a handful of the copper coins. Not only are pennies useless, but they are also economically inefficient. Did you know that every penny actually costs the US mint 1.8 cents to make?
