Ink, fountain, ballpoint—Everybody loves a good pen. But for some people, a decent pen isn't quite good enough, which is where high-class writing implements come in. If you're one of these people, we present you with the five most expensive pens ever.

5. Mystery Masterpiece by Montblanc and Van Cleef and Arpels, $730,000

This collaboration took skilled artisans nearly two years to create, and was available encrusted with three different type of gems: rubies, sapphires or emeralds. There was only three of each style made.

4. Heaven Gold by Anita Tan, $995,510

The design of this pen draws its inspiration from the changing alignment of the planets. It includes 161 diamonds surrounding a 43-carat Tsavorite gemstone that is estimated to be more than two billion years old.

3. Diamante by Aurora, $1.28 million

Talk about exclusive: Only one Diamante pen is produced each year. It features more than 30 carats diamonds on a solid platinum barrel. It's topped off with an even larger diamond and a nib of 18-karat gold. The buyer can choose to have the pen emblazoned with a family coat of arms, signature or portrait.

2. Montblanc Boehme Royal, $1.5 million

The Royal has an 18-karat gold, platinum plated retractable nib. The barrel and cap of this pen are crafted from 18-karat white gold and covered with more than 1,430 diamonds. In addition, the Montblanc star logo contains 18 diamonds and 18-karat white gold rings.

1. Fulgor Nocturnus by Tibaldi, $8 million

Made by Italy-based pen maker Tibaldi, the world's most expensive pen is embellished with 945 black diamonds and another 123 rubies around the rim. But don't look for this writing instrument in stores, there was only one ever made, and it was sold for $8 million at a charity auction in Shanghai.
