Will Smith went from rap artist, to television star, to Oscar-nominated film star in what seemed like a ridiculously short amount of time. After bursting into the mainstream as one half of the rap duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, he parlayed his musical popularity into a starring role on the popular television show, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". From there, the step up to film roles was a relatively small one, and he received excellent reviews for his debut performance in the film adaptation of the play, "Six Degrees of Separation". His next film project, "Bad Boys", was a massive success, and launched his career as an action star. Since then, he has appeared in a steady stream of blockbuster films, including "Independence Day", "Men in Black" and "Men in Black II", "I, Robot", "Hitch", "I Am Legend", and "Hancock". He has also received Oscar nominations for "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness", and has also served as producer on a number of his most successful films. In other words, the man is smart and talented, and as he is often traveling, he chooses to rent most of the time. During the filming of the upcoming "Men in Black III", which he has been promoting all over the world for the last month, Mr. Smith rented a loft apartment on Bond Street in New York. That apartment was recently listed for $19.5 million.
The apartment is 7,236 square feet, and includes five bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms. Hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a massive open-plan media/dining/living room area make the apartment feel even bigger. The apartment also comes complete with its own laundry room, a guest area, a dressing room off of the master bedroom, and two balconies. Since Mr. Smith decamped post the "MIB III" shoot, no one has forked over the $19.5 million asking price for the apartment. Nor have they rented it for the $55,000/month he was paying. There is now talk of splitting the apartment into two separate units at approximately $10 million each. Who knows, if "Men in Black III" is a massive hit, maybe Mr. Smith's star-power will be enough to cause someone to fork over almost $20 million for his former pad.
