In 2010, Chelsea Handler paid $6 million for a home above the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles. The 5,572-square-foot property featured six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, along with multiple entertaining spaces, including two family rooms. The den included a fireplace, a flat-screen TV, and sliding glass panels that opened directly to the backyard. The home also offered a modern kitchen with high-end appliances, a dedicated exercise room, and expansive outdoor amenities such as a heated 50-foot swimming pool with an attached spa, terraces, an outdoor fireplace, and a built-in barbecue area.

Handler first listed the home for $11.5 million in 2018 but did not find a buyer. According to Handler, she was advised that the home would not be safe to occupy for at least two years due to environmental and structural concerns. As it turned out, she allegedly could not live in the home for more than five years.

She further alleged that the property lacked a proper foundation in certain areas and that additional issues, including an unpermitted or "illegal" structure on the grounds, were not identified during the initial inspection process. Handler expressed frustration that these problems were not disclosed or discovered prior to closing, noting that the transaction had been conducted through trusts, which meant she was not initially aware of the sellers' identities.

Handler also said she received a note from Cheryl Hines after the sale offering assistance if needed, which she later referenced sarcastically while discussing the extent of the repairs. The situation became a lingering source of frustration for Handler, who indicated that the unexpected costs and delays turned the purchase into one of the more challenging real estate experiences of her life.
