Zach Gilford was born Zachary Michael Gilford on January 14, 1982, in Evanston, Illinois. He is the son of a Lutheran mother, Anne, and a Jewish father, Steve. After graduating from Evanston Township High School, Zach attended Northwestern University. He worked for Adventures Cross-Country as a trip leader, and he led adventure and wilderness trips for teenagers to Hawaii, Alaska, California, the South Pacific, and British Columbia. On the Adventures Cross-Country website, he stated, "One of my favorite ARCC memories was trekking up over an Alaskan tundra pass. We were greeted by a herd of caribou and views of glaciated river valleys below. We looked down to see the highlight of our adventure, a snowfield. Our group spent the afternoon glissading through this snowfield, laughing all the while. Traveling off trail for the past six days, it was clear that we had this playground all to ourselves." Gilford was also a staff member for Michigan's YMCA Camp Echo.

Career

In 2003, Gilford appeared in the short film "Handbook to Casual Stalking," and two years later, he guest-starred on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." He got his big break in 2006 when he began starring as Matt Saracen on the NBC sports drama "Friday Night Lights." Zach was a main cast member during the first three seasons, and he had a recurring role during the fourth and fifth seasons. Personal Life

Zach began a relationship with actress Kiele Sanchez in the spring of 2010. The two met while filming the pilot for "Matadors," and they later co-starred in "The Purge: Anarchy." Gilford and Sanchez married on December 29, 2012, a little over a year after becoming engaged. In August 2015, Kiele announced that she was expecting a son with Zach, but sadly, she suffered a miscarriage a few weeks before her due date. In November 2017, they welcomed a daughter, Zeppelin, via surrogacy, followed by a son, Revel, in 2021. In April 2025, Gilford filed for divorce from Sanchez, citing irreconcilable differences.
