Early Life and Youth Club Career
Guillermo Ochoa was born on July 13, 1985 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He began his youth career in 1995 with Club América, for which he played on the youth level until 2004.
Professional Club Career
Ochoa made his first-team debut for América during the Clausura 2004 tournament. He went on to win the Clausura 2005, the same year he won the Campeón de Campeones. The following year, Ochoa won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup with América and earned his first of two consecutive Golden Gloves. His final championship win with América was the 2008 InterLiga. Following the Clausura 2011, Ochoa moved to the newly promoted French Ligue 1 club Ajaccio. In his first season with the club, he had eight clean sheets, 43 saves, and 151 blocks, but he also conceded 59 goals. The next season, in 2012-13, he had 12 clean sheets. Ochoa spent one final season with Ajaccio in 2013-14, when the club was demoted to Ligue 2.
Ochoa signed a three-year contract with the Spanish La Liga club Málaga in 2014. However, he made infrequent appearances for the club, and for the 2016-17 season he was loaned to Granada. Ochoa played every minute of Granada's season, but couldn't prevent the club's relegation to the Segunda División. He went on to sign a two-year contract with the Belgian club Standard Liège in 2017. Ochoa won the Belgian Cup in his first season with the club. After his second season in Belgium, he returned to his original team, América, on a three-and-a-half year contract. During this stint, Ochoa became the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in América history, surpassing Adrián Chávez's record of 110. He went on to play for the Italian Serie A club Salernitana and the Portuguese Primeira Liga club AVS before signing with the Cypriot First Division club AEL Limassol in 2025.
International Career
Ochoa began his international career with the Mexico national under-23 team in 2004. He made his senior national team debut the following year in a friendly match against Hungary, with Mexico winning 2-0. In 2006, Ochoa was called up for the FIFA World Cup as the third-choice goalkeeper. The next year, he made his CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa América debuts. Ochoa won his first Gold Cup in 2009, and in 2010 he was Mexico's back-up goalkeeper in the FIFA World Cup. In 2011, he won his second Gold Cup amid false doping allegations. Ochoa went on to finally make his World Cup debut in 2014, starting in Mexico's opening match win against Cameroon. He earned high praise for his performance as Mexico reached the round-of-16. Ultimately, the Netherlands eliminated his team. In 2015, Ochoa won his third Gold Cup with Mexico.
Ochoa played in his second World Cup in 2018, appearing in all four of Mexico's games. He recorded 25 saves, the second-most in the tournament after Belgium's Thibaut Courtois. Ochoa had one of his greatest years of international play in 2019, when he claimed his fourth Gold Cup and won his first Golden Glove. A couple of years later, he helped Mexico win the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Back in the World Cup in 2022, Ochoa had a disappointing performance as Mexico was eliminated in the group stage for the first time since 1978. He and the team came back strong in 2023 to claim another Gold Cup, a record fifth for Ochoa, who also won his second Golden Glove. Ochoa continued his success in 2024-25, first by helping Mexico win its first-ever CONCACAF Nations League title and then by winning a record sixth Gold Cup.
Other Ventures
Beyond the field, Ochoa helped found the Mexican Footballers Association in 2017. He has also invested in various startups over the years, including the on-demand music download platform Trebel.
