Sage Steele is best known for co-hosting the ESPN programs "SportsCenter" and "NBA Countdown," on the former of which she covered every NBA Finals from 2012 to 2020. She also contributed to such other ESPN shows as "First Take," "SportsNation," and "Mike & Mike."

Early Life and Education

Sage Steele was born on November 28, 1972 in the Panama Canal Zone. She is the daughter of Mona, who has Irish and Italian ancestry, and Gary, who is African-American and was a star athlete in the Army. Steele has two brothers named Courtney and Chad. Due to her father's career in the Army, she moved around often with her family, living in such countries as Greece and Belgium. Back in the United States in 1984, Steele attended Thomas B. Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado for two years. The family subsequently moved to Carmel, Indiana, where Steele went to Carmel High School. After graduating in 1990, she attended Indiana University Bloomington, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication in 1995.

Television Sportscasting

Steele began her television sportscasting career at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana, serving as both a producer and reporter from 1995 to 1997. She then moved to WISH-TV in Indianapolis, where she did sports reporting on weekdays and weekend mornings from 1997 to 1998. Steele covered major teams such as the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers, as well as local college and high school sports. Next, from 1998 to 2001, she did sports reporting for WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida. Steele also contributed to Fox Sports Florida. She covered the major teams in the region, including the Orlando Magic and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After her time in Florida, Steele moved to the newly formed Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic in Bethesda, Maryland, where she anchored the network's nightly local sports news show "SportsNite." She served as both an anchor and reporter at CSN Mid-Atlantic from 2001 to 2007.

In 2007, Steele joined ESPN. She went on to co-anchor the morning block of the network's flagship sports news program, "SportsCenter," with Hannah Storm. In 2013, Steele joined David Lloyd as co-anchor of the weekday early afternoon block, and she also became the new host of "NBA Countdown" on ESPN and ABC. She remained on "NBA Countdown" until 2017. Steele subsequently returned to the morning block of "SportsCenter," where she was joined by Randy Scott and Jay Harris. After anchoring the evening edition of the show for some years, Steele became the noon "SportsCenter" co-anchor with Matt Barrie in early 2021. However, later that year, ESPN suspended her without pay due to comments she had made on Jay Cutler's podcast about her distaste for COVID-19 vaccine mandates and women dressing in a certain way. Steele filed a lawsuit against ESPN in 2022 and settled with the network the next year.

Among her other media appearances, Steele drove the pace car in the 2013 Brickyard 400 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. She has also made several appearances over the years not related to sports. From 2010 to 2013, Steele hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and in 2017 and 2018 she co-hosted ABC's coverage of the Miss America competition with Chris Harrison. Steele also served as a guest host on the ABC talk show "The View" on several occasions. In other media, she was named the first podcast host on Bill Maher's podcast network Club Random Studios in 2024. Shortly after that, Steele lent her voice to the second episode of the adult animated sitcom "Mr. Birchum," a spinoff of the sketch comedy puppet show "Crank Yankers."

Personal Life

In 1999, Steele married Jonathan Bailey. They had two daughters and a son together, and divorced in 2019. Steele previously resided in an 8,500-square-foot mansion in Avon, Connecticut, which she listed for about $1.6 million in early 2021 following a series of major renovations.
