Early Life

Kiera Chaplin was born on July 1, 1982 in Belfast, Northern Ireland as the eldest daughter of Bernadette and Eugene Chaplin. She is the granddaughter of film icon Charlie Chaplin and the great-granddaughter of famed playwright Eugene O'Neill. Chaplin was raised in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland until her parents divorced in the mid-1990s.

Modeling Career

When she was 16, Chaplin moved to Paris, France and signed with the modeling agency NEXT Model Management. A year later, she moved to New York City. Chaplin went on to live in Los Angeles for a while before moving back to New York in 2006. During her time in New York, she appeared in such high-profile fashion magazines as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and InStyle. Over the years, Chaplin has also graced the covers of Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Town and Country. Meanwhile, she has modeled for such fashion brands as Tommy Hilfiger, Asprey, Armani, and Benetton. Chaplin has been photographed by many of the top fashion photographers in the world, including Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, and Mario Testino.

Business Ventures

In addition to modeling, Chaplin has been involved in the fashion world as an entrepreneur. In 2013, she designed her own line of sneakers in collaboration with the Italian brand Hogan. Chaplin also founded the online fashion retail boutique SybaBliss, which offers apparel and accessories for a diversity of young women. Additionally, she is a shareholder of the sustainable cosmetics and fashion brand Bufarma. Chaplin also has a stake in the Hollywood film company Limelight Productions.

In other business ventures, Chaplin founded the Chaplin Awards, which celebrates actors and filmmakers in Asia who promote diversity through their work. Recipients of the honor have included Zhang Yimou, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and Ge You. Elsewhere, in Paris, Chaplin serves as president of the Fondation Fleur du Désert, which was founded by Somali model, author, and humanitarian Waris Dirie. In early 2020, Chaplin opened the first Kiera Chaplin Desert Flower School in Sierra Leone.

Film and Television

As an actress, Chaplin had her first major role in the 2002 romantic war drama film "The Year That Trembled." A few years later, she began her association with Bollywood cinema with a role in "Yatna." In 2006, Chaplin appeared in the biopic "Sister Aimee: The Aimee Semple McPherson Story." The next decade, she was in the Italian film "Interno Giorno" (2011) and the Indian film "Chaurahen." On television, Chaplin served as a guest judge on the seventh season of the reality competition series "Project Runway All Stars," which aired in early 2019.

Personal Life

From 2004 to 2006, Chaplin was married to Alexandre Alé de Basseville, a French photographer and painter.
