Early Life

Francesco Totti was born on September 27, 1976, in Rome, Italy. He is the son of Fiorella and Lorenzo Totti, and he has a brother named Riccardo. During his youth, Francesco idolized Giuseppe Giannini, who was the captain of Roma. He often played football with older boys, and in 1984, he joined the Fortitudo youth football team. Totti later played youth football with Trastevere and Lodigiani. After he caught the attention of scouts, his mother turned down an offer from Milan because she wanted to keep Francesco in Rome. In 1989, Roma youth coach Gildo Giannini convinced Totti's parents to let him join Roma's youth squad.

Career

After spending three years on the youth team, Totti made his senior debut for Roma in Serie A in March 1993 at the age of 16. The following season, he played more regularly in the position of second striker, and he scored his first goal in September 1994. By the 1994–95 season, Francesco was regularly part of Roma's starting line-up, and he scored 43 league goals by the end of the 1999–2000 season. During this time, he also scored five goals in the Coppa Italia tournament and six goals in the UEFA Europa League competition. Totti was named team captain in October 1998 at the age of 22, making him the youngest team captain in the history of Serie A. At the end of the 1998–99 season, he was named the Serie A Young Footballer of the Year. Francesco won his first Supercoppa Italiana tournament in 2001, and the team won again in 2007. During the 2003–04, he scored 20 league goals, which was a career high at the time. He surpassed the achievement with 26 league goals during the 2006–07 season.

In late 2004, Totti became the club's all-time leading scorer in Serie A after he scored his 107th league goal. Roma won the Coppa Italia during the 2006–07 and 2007–08 seasons, and Francesco played on the Italy national team when they won the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
