Early Life

Steve McManaman was born Steven McManaman on February 11, 1972, in Bootle, Lancashire, England. He grew up supporting Everton Football Club and idolized players such as Duncan McKenzie and Bob Latchford. After McManaman gained attention at school tournaments, Everton offered him a two-year contract. However, his father turned it down and instead accepted a two-year apprenticeship and schoolboy contract offer from Liverpool Football Club. Steve signed with Liverpool as a 16-year-old when he left school in 1988, and he was mentored by John Barnes. McManaman has been described as a natural athlete and was a cross-country champion in school.

Career

In February 1990, McManaman signed with Liverpool as a full professional, and he made his professional debut on December 15th of that year. He scored his first goal as a professional on August 21, 1991, and during the 1991–92 season, he became a regular first-team player at the age of 19. Steve started in the FA Cup final in May 1992, which Liverpool won, and he was named Man of the Match. He signed a million-pound contract with Liverpool at the beginning of the 1994–95 season, and he scored nine goals that season. Liverpool won the 1994–95 English Football League Cup. McManaman scored 10 goals each during the 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons and 12 goals during the 1997–98 season. In January 1999, he signed a pre-contract with Real Madrid. During his final season with Liverpool, he scored five goals during the five months he had left on his contract.

In 2021, Steve spoke about his decision to leave Liverpool, stating, "I was getting to the end of my Liverpool contract. I felt Liverpool were very slow in coming to me with a new deal. As it got on, two years, a year and a half, a year to go of the contract, I just felt that the opportunity now to play abroad – which I'd always wanted to do, I was always thinking about doing – was more prevalent than ever." He added, "I was arguably the best player in the team at the time and I was possibly the worst-paid in the team at the time. Some players had come in and earned two, three four times more than me." McManaman began his stint with Real Madrid during the 1999–2000 season, and he stayed with them through the 2002–03 season. During his time with Real Madrid, he scored 14 goals, and the club won the 1999–2000 and 2001–02 UEFA Champions League, the 2000-01 and 2002–03 La Liga, the 2001 and 2003 Supercopa de Espana, the 2002 UEFA Super Cup, and the 2002 Intercontinental Cup. Real Madrid released Steve shortly after they signed David Beckham, despite Beckham asking the club to keep McManaman on. Steve played for Manchester City during the 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons, but he didn't score any goals during his time with them. After Manchester City released him in 2005, he retired from playing. In 2013, it was announced that McManaman would be accepting a coaching role with the Liverpool F.C. Reserves and Academy.
