Shelley Malil was born Shelley Mathew Malil on December 23, 1964, in Kerala, India. In 1974, 11-year-old Shelley immigrated to the United States with his family. He began acting as a teenager, and at the age of 18, he performed with a summer stock company at Texas' Granbury Opera House.

Career

After two years at New York City's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Malil moved to Hollywood. His career began with guest roles on shows such as "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." (1994), "ER" (1995), "Tracey Takes On…" (1996), "Seinfeld" (1997), "Silk Stalkings" (1998), "Pacific Blue" (1999), and "Party of Five" (1999), and he had a recurring role as Haji on "Mike Hammer, Private Eye" (1998). He appeared in the 1997 TV movie "The Second Civil War," and his first feature film was 1998's "Dead Man on Campus," which starred Tom Everett Scott and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. The following year, Shelley co-starred with Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Daniels, Elizabeth Hurley, and Daryl Hannah in the film adaptation of the '60 TV series "My Favorite Martian." In 2000, Malil guest-starred on "The Jamie Foxx Show" and NYPD Blue" and appeared in the film "Perfect Game" and the TV movie "How to Marry a Billionaire: A Christmas Tale." On August 10, 2008, Shelley stabbed Kendra Beebe, his ex-girlfriend, 23 times. Beebe survived the brutal attack, but she suffered two collapsed lungs and a severe cut on her chin in addition to losing approximately half the blood in her body. Malil was arrested the next day while he was getting off a train in Oceanside, California. Two years later, Shelley was convicted of attempted murder as well as assault with a deadly weapon, and he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He only served eight years in prison for his crime and was released in September 2018. After Malil's release, Beebe stated, "I will always have to watch my back for the rest of my life."

Awards and Nominations

The Associated Press included Malil on its "Top 10 Overlooked Performances of 2005" list for "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." He won a Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Featured Actor for the Shakespeare play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and was nominated for his performance in the Eric Bogosian play "SubUrbia." Shelley also won a Clio Award for appearing in Budweiser commercials.
