What is Jason Newsted's Net Worth?

Jason Newsted is an American heavy metal musician who has a net worth of $60 million.

Jason Newsted is best known as the former bassist for Metallica during one of the most commercially explosive periods in the band's history. Joining Metallica in 1986 following the death of Cliff Burton, Newsted stepped into an extraordinarily difficult role alongside co-founders James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. He remained with the band for 15 years, performing on "…And Justice for All," "Metallica" (commonly known as "The Black Album"), "Load," "Reload," and "Garage Inc.," albums that collectively sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.

Known for his aggressive picking style, high backing vocals, and intense stage presence, Newsted helped carry Metallica through its late-1980s rise and 1990s global domination. Though internal tensions eventually led to his departure in 2001, his era in the band coincided with its peak commercial success. Outside of Metallica, Newsted has pursued a wide range of musical projects, including Flotsam and Jetsam, Echobrain, Voivod, Ozzy Osbourne's touring band, and his own group, Newsted. Over four decades, he has built a reputation as a versatile bassist, songwriter, and performer, balancing heavy metal roots with artistic experimentation.

Early Life

Jason Curtis Newsted was born on March 4, 1963, in Battle Creek, Michigan, and raised in a working-class household in Niles, Michigan. He grew up listening to Motown, rock, and early heavy metal. Inspired by bands such as Kiss, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin, Newsted gravitated toward the bass guitar in his teens.

He played in several local bands before forming Flotsam and Jetsam in Arizona in the early 1980s. The band became part of the emerging thrash metal movement and released the album "Doomsday for the Deceiver" in 1986, which gained attention in underground metal circles.

Joining Metallica

In September 1986, Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden. The band auditioned dozens of players before selecting Newsted. At just 23 years old, he joined one of the most important metal bands in the world during an emotionally volatile period.

Newsted's first studio album with Metallica was 1988's "…And Justice for All." The album became a commercial breakthrough, earning a Grammy nomination and introducing the band to mainstream audiences with the single "One." However, controversy surrounded the record's production, as Newsted's bass tracks were mixed very low in the final release.

Commercial Peak: "The Black Album" Era

Metallica's 1991 self-titled album marked the band's transition into global superstardom. "The Black Album" debuted at number one and has sold more than 16 million copies in the United States alone. Newsted toured extensively during this era, performing in front of massive international audiences.

Throughout the 1990s, Metallica released "Load" in 1996 and "Reload" in 1997, exploring a more groove-oriented and alternative-influenced sound. Newsted's backing vocals and live energy became a defining part of the band's stage presence during marathon world tours.

In addition to studio albums, the band released "Garage Inc." in 1998 and collaborated with the San Francisco Symphony for the live album "S&M" in 1999. These projects further expanded Metallica's audience.

Black Album Royalties

The 1991 album "Metallica", which is more commonly referred to as "the Black Album", is certified 16X platinum. The album is so successful to this day that it has long been alleged that Jason and the other Metallica members could live extremely well off the Black Album's annual royalties alone. It apparently still sells 5,000 copies every week, even though it is 30 years old.

Departure and Aftermath

Despite commercial success, tensions simmered behind the scenes. Newsted reportedly sought more creative input and opportunities for side projects, including his band Echobrain, but encountered resistance from Hetfield and Ulrich. Creative control within Metallica largely centered on the founding duo, and Newsted sometimes felt constrained.

In January 2001, he announced his departure, citing personal reasons and physical strain from years of intense touring. His exit occurred during a turbulent period that was later documented in "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster." In 2003, Robert Trujillo was brought in as the band's new bassist, ushering in the modern Metallica lineup.

Post-Metallica Career

After leaving Metallica, Newsted joined Canadian progressive thrash band Voivod and contributed to several albums. He also toured with Ozzy Osbourne for a period and later formed his own band, Newsted, releasing "Heavy Metal Music" in 2013.

Beyond music, he has devoted significant time to visual art, developing a serious practice in painting and mixed media. He has described this phase of his life as a period of creative freedom without the pressures of arena-scale touring.
