Early Life
Elise Neal was born Elise Demetria Neal on March 14, 1966, in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the daughter of a construction worker and a nurse. Elise attended Lakeview Elementary, and during her youth, she was a cheerleader and a ballet dancer. During a high toss cheerleading stunt, Neal broke her left wrist, and it never completely straightened back out after the bones healed. After graduating from Overton High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Elise enrolled at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1984. She left college two years later and moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. She began performing in stage musicals and traveled around the world with touring companies. Neal later started booking commercials and moved to Los Angeles. Before moving to Philadelphia for college, Elise had been a member of the Tennessee Ballet Company.

An "Essence" interview that was published when Elise was starring on The Hughleys" mentioned that she was engaged to film director F. Gary Gray and set to marry him the following year. Gray has directed films such as "Friday," "Set It Off," "The Italian Job," and "Straight Outta Compton." In the interview, Neal said of the relationship, "We are both really down to earth and our relationship is built on how we feel about each other, nobody really intrudes on our space. We don't care if the media appreciates us as a couple — we're really not tripping off of the Hollywood 'hot couple' thing! I love the times I hang out with Gary and just go to the movies. Just doing normal stuff." The couple later split, but Elise said in a 2019 interview with D.L. Hughley, "I got nothing but love for F. Gary Gray. Nothing but love. He's taught me a lot about the business too."
