While studying at Jesus College, Cambridge in 2008, Patterson met fellow student and musician Grace Chatto, who was in a classical string quartet. He began creating samples using recordings of her string quartet, and he then recruited his younger brother Luke to join on drums. Neil Amin-Smith joined on violin and piano, and Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka joined as a vocalist. The group became the electronic music group Clean Bandit, with Jack Patterson as producer and principal songwriter. Clean Bandit released its debut single, "A+E," in late 2012. Featuring vocals from Kandaka Moore and Nikki Cislyn, the single cracked the UK singles chart at number 100. In 2013, Clean Bandit released "Mozart's House," featuring Love Ssega, and "Dust Clears," featuring Noonie Bao. The former reached number 17 on the UK singles chart. Clean Bandit had its breakout single with "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne; it became the group's first UK number-one single upon its release in 2014. It also charted in numerous other countries, and reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Rather Be" went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, and also won two Ivor Novello Awards.
In May of 2014, Clean Bandit released its debut studio album, "New Eyes." Featuring the group's previously released singles, as well as future single "Come Over," the album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. A special edition of the album was later released, featuring the hit singles "Real Love" and "Stronger." Clean Bandit had its next UK number-one single in 2016, with "Rockabye." Featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie, it topped the charts in over 28 other countries, as well. In 2017, the group topped the UK singles chart for a third time with "Symphony," featuring Zara Larsson. Further hits followed with "I Miss You," featuring Julia Michaels, and "Solo," featuring Demi Lovato; the latter was Clean Bandit's fourth UK number-one single. The group's next single was "Baby," featuring Marina and Luis Fonsi and released in late 2018. Clean Bandit then released its second studio album, "What is Love?," which peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart. The album's final single was "Mama," featuring Ellie Goulding.
