Early Life
Mel Robbins was born Melanie Lee Schneeberger on October 6, 1968, in Kansas City, Missouri. Her mother got pregnant during her sophomore year of college and subsequently dropped out, while her father went on to become an osteopathic doctor. Mel was raised in North Muskegon, Michigan, then she attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. In 1994, she graduated from Boston College Law School with a Juris Doctor degree.
Early Career
Robbins first worked as a public defender in New York, and she was involved with the Legal Aid Society in 1996. In 1999, she moved an hour away from Boston and launched a business as a life coach. Five years later, her husband, Christopher, was laid off and decided to open a pizza restaurant. He soon opened two more locations, and the couple went into debt. Mel took a job as a weekend talk show host on a local radio station, where she was paid $25 per hour.
Media Career and Books
In 2012, she was offered a job at the Orlando radio station WBDO, and after George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Howard in Sanford, Florida, Robbins covered the story for the station. This led to Mel being hired by CNN as an on-air legal analyst. In 2011, she published her first book, "Stop Saying You're Fine: Discover a More Powerful You," and she gave the TEDx talk "How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over," which went viral. In the TEDx talk, Robbins introduced the "five second rule," which she says can "break any bad habit, interrupt self-doubt and negative self-talk, and push yourself to take the actions that will change your life." She released the book "The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage" in 2017, and it has sold more than a million copies. According to Mel's website, the audiobook of "The 5 Second Rule" is the bestselling self-published audiobook of all time.
From 2019 to 2020, Robbins hosted and executive produced the syndicated talk show "The Mel Robbins Show," then she published the book "The High 5 Habit: Take Control of Your Life with One Simple Habit," which was named one of Barnes & Noble's Best Books of 2021. In 2022, she began hosting "The Mel Robbins Podcast," on which she "researches and hand-selects the most interesting and accomplished experts in science and human behavior and engages with them each week to turn science-backed wisdom into practical advice." "The Mel Robbins Podcast" was named one of Spotify's Top Global Shows of 2024 and one of Apple Podcasts' Most Followed Shows of 2023 and 2024. In late 2024, Mel published the book "The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About," and it became 2025's top-selling book. People often come up to Robbins and tell her that she has improved their lives, and she told Time in 2024, "Every time somebody stops me, it's just a reminder of how that's all you need, a little encouragement. It's really as simple as that."
