Chumbo won his first major surfing competition in 2017, at the WSL Nazaré Big Wave Challenge. In 2018, he won the Mormaii Big Wave Challenge and the Puerto Escondido Cup. For his achievements that year, Chumbo received the Billabong XXL award for Best Male Performance and the Surfer Award for Heavy Water. Among his other wins are the Punta Galea Challenge and the 2020 Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge, the latter of which he won with his partner Kai Lenny in the men's big wave category.

Reality Television

In early 2020, Chumbo competed on the reality show "Big Brother Brasil 20," the 20th season of "Big Brother Brasil." For the first time, the show was divided into groups of celebrities and civilians. Chumbo's fellow celebrity housemates included artistic gymnast Petrix Barbosa, singer-songwriter Gabi Martins, model and influencer Rafa Kalimann, and actor and singer Babu Santana. Among the civilian housemates were Victor Hugo Teixeira, Felipe Prior, Marcela McGowan, and Thelma Assis. On Day 8 of the show, Chumbo became the first housemate to be evicted. Lenny had his career breakthrough in 2012 when he won the Hawaii Island Finals SUP Pro and the Sunset Beach SUP Pro. Concluding the season, he won the finals of the inaugural Standup World Series championship. Lenny went on to have an incredibly successful year in 2013, winning numerous titles. In addition to claiming the Vice KSP Kiting World Championship, he won the SUP Wave World Championship and his second consecutive Standup World Series finals. Lenny was named the 2013 SUP Overall World Champion. Among his other notable wins, he won the elite Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships in 2016 and won the inaugural SUP foil division of the event in 2019.
