Heizer went on to have a prolific year in 2007, with guest roles on "Bones," "Private Practice," and "Shark" and a four-episode recurring role as Joshua Lipnicki on "ER." Concluding the decade, he played Keith Oats in a season-seven episode of "Cold Case." Heizer landed his biggest role yet in 2010, in the NBC series "Parenthood." He played the main role of Drew Holt, the shy son of Lauren Graham's character Sarah. Others in the cast included Peter Krause, Dax Shepard, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen, and Sarah Ramos. "Parenthood" was a big hit, running for six seasons until 2015.

From 2017 to 2020, Heizer played the main role of Alex Standall in the Netflix teen drama series "13 Reasons Why," based on the novel of the same name by Jay Asher. Heizer made his big-screen debut in the 2007 film "Rails & Ties," playing an orphaned boy who is taken in by a cruel foster mother. For his performance, he received a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Leading Young Actor in a Feature Film. Heizer next starred opposite Billy Crudup in the 2014 musical drama "Rudderless," which was the directorial debut of actor William H. Macy. The following year, he appeared in the ensemble cast of the docudrama thriller "The Stanford Prison Experiment," about the titular experiment conducted at Stanford University in 1971. Heizer next had a supporting role in the 2016 techno-thriller "Nerve," based on the novel by Jeanne Ryan and starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco.

Following a brief part in the 2017 legal drama "Roman J. Israel, Esq.," Heizer played high school student Cal Price in the 2018 gay teen romance film "Love, Simon," based on Becky Albertalli's novel "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda."
