Early Life and Education
Jack Lowden was born on June 2, 1990 in Essex, England to Scottish parents. He has a younger brother named Calum. Raised in the rural Scottish town of Oxton, Lowden took dance classes at the Manor School of Ballet in Edinburgh. He took more to acting, however, and when he was 10 years old his parents enrolled him in Edinburgh's Scottish Youth Theatre. As a teenager, Lowden attended Earlston High School, where he performed in concerts and starred as Buddy Holly in a production of the stage musical "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story." During the summer, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Lowden went on to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, from which he earned his bachelor's degree in acting in 2011.
Television Career
Lowden had his first role on television in 2010 with a guest role on "Being Victor." He next appeared in two episodes of the 2012 ITV series "Mrs Biggs." Lowden had a bigger part the following year, playing the son of Stephen Dillane's protagonist in the first season of the British-French crime drama "The Tunnel." His first leading role on television came in 2014, when he starred as a German soldier during World War I in the five-part BBC One drama "The Passing Bells." Lowden's co-star was Patrick Gibson. Next, Lowden played Nikolai Rostov in the six-part BBC One adaptation of "War & Peace," which premiered in early 2016. He went on to appear in three biographical films in 2016, starting with the historical drama "Tommy's Honour," in which he portrayed young golf prodigy Tom Morris Jr. opposite Peter Mullan as Old Tom Morris. Lowden then portrayed British politician Tony Benn in "A United Kingdom" and an attorney in "Denial." In 2017, he played an RAF fighter pilot in the World War II drama "Dunkirk" and portrayed singer-songwriter Morrissey in the biopic "England is Mine." The next year, Lowden starred in the psychological thriller "Calibre" and portrayed Lord Darnley in the historical drama "Mary Queen of Scots." He earned British Academy Scotland Award nominations for both, and won for the former. Stage Career
In 2010, Lowden made his professional stage debut playing the lead character in the National Theatre of Scotland's revival of Gregory Burke's "Back Watch." He subsequently went on tour with the production in the UK and US through 2011. Lowden then starred as athlete and Christian missionary Eric Liddell in the play "Chariots of Fire," an adaptation of the 1981 Oscar-winning film of the same name. Partially inspired by the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the show premiered at Hampstead Theatre before moving to the West End.
Lowden earned his best reviews yet when he played Oswald Alving in Richard Eyre's revival of Ibsen's "Ghosts" in 2013. The show opened at the Almeida Theatre and transferred to the West End at the end of the year. There was also a filmed performance of the production that screened in cinemas in 2014. Lowden's work in "Ghosts" earned him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor.
