Erin Doherty was born on July 16, 1992 in Crawley, England. When she was four, her parents divorced. Not long after that, Doherty and her sister Grace began taking acting classes. As a youth, Doherty attended Hazelwick School and played football with the Crawley Wasps. She eventually decided to pursue acting over football, and took a one-year course at the Guildford School of Acting before training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School from 2012 to 2015. In the latter year, Doherty won the Stephen Sondheim Society's Student Performer of the Year Award for her rendition of "Broadway Baby" in the Sondheim musical "Follies."
Television Career
Doherty made her screen-acting debut with a guest role in a 2017 episode of the BBC period drama "Call the Midwife." Following an uncredited part in the 2018 BBC One adaptation of "Les Misérables," she had her breakthrough television role in 2019 when she began playing the young Princess Anne on the Netflix historical drama series "The Crown," then in its third season. Doherty reprised the role of Princess Anne in the fourth season of "The Crown" in 2020. The same year, she appeared in an episode of the BBC Four series "Unprecedented," which consisted of short plays filmed remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Next, in 2022, Doherty starred in the psychological thriller miniseries "Chloe," playing a lonely woman who becomes obsessed with the suicide of her childhood friend, played by Poppy Gilbert. The series premiered on BBC One before being released worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.

Doherty began her professional stage career in 2017. That year, she appeared in "Junkyard" at the Bristol Old Vic, "A Christmas Carol" at the Old Vic, and the one-woman biographical play "My Name is Rachel Corrie" at the Young Vic. Doherty returned to the Old Vic in 2018 to star in Sir Alan Ayckbourn's play "The Divide." In 2019, she appeared in "Wolfie" at Theatre503. Doherty went on to make her National Theatre debut in 2022 in a production of "The Crucible."
