Financial Disclosures

According to his most recent financial disclosures, Zohran Mamdani's most significant personal asset is a parcel of land in Uganda, which he purchased around 2014 for approximately $80,000. According to his official financial disclosures, the land spans about four acres and is now estimated to be worth between $150,000 and $250,000. This property is located in or near Kampala, Uganda's capital, and is the only real estate asset Mamdani has reported. He does not own any property in New York or elsewhere in the U.S., and his state filings list no other major investments. He pays roughly $3,000 a month in rent for an apartment in Queens.

His U.S. assets are limited to a small retirement account and minimal royalty income—about $1,000–$1,300 annually—from his former rap persona, Young Cardamom. His ethics disclosures list no stocks, banks, business interests, or debts.

Salary

Zohran Mamdani earns an annual $142,000 as a member of the New York State Assembly—the highest legislative salary in the country following a pay raise at the start of 2023.

Early Life and Education

Zohran Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda to filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood. Both of his parents are of Indian descent, with his mother being a Punjabi Hindu and his father a Gujarati Muslim. When Mamdani was five years old, he moved with his family to Cape Town, South Africa. There, he attended St. George's Grammar School before moving to New York City when he was seven. Mamdani then attended the Bank Street School for Children on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. As a teenager, he went to the Bronx High School of Science, and for college, he attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Mamdani graduated in 2014 with his bachelor's degree in African studies.

Career Beginnings

Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor specializing in foreclosure prevention. He specifically assisted non-white lower-income homeowners in Queens. Mamdani was also involved with hip hop music, composing and producing some tracks under the monikers Young Cardamom and Mr. Cardamom. In 2016, he curated and produced the soundtrack to his mother's film "Queen of Katwe."

Start in Politics

In 2015, Mamdani worked as a volunteer for Ali Najmi's campaign for New York City Council in the 23rd district. Two years later, he joined the Democratic Socialists of America and volunteered for Khader El-Yateem's New York City Council campaign. In 2018, Mamdani was the campaign manager for Ross Barkan's New York State Senate run, and in 2019 he worked as a field organizer for Tiffany Cabán's Queens County District Attorney campaign.

New York State Assembly

In late 2019, Mamdani announced his candidacy for New York's 36th State Assembly district. Although disgraced former mayor Andrew Cuomo had the lead going into the primary, Mamdani pulled ahead and ended up winning the race.

He champions universal child care and single-payer healthcare, police and prison reform, LGBTQ+ and immigrant rights, clean energy, and tax increases on the wealthy.
