Her father worked a number of different jobs while she was growing up, including as a teacher, principal, bank manager, and deputy mayor of the town, while her mother worked in human resources at the Ministry of Education. She grew up with her older brother, Javier, and has generally described her childhood as happy despite growing up in Cuba during a time of fuel shortages, food rationing, and electricity blackouts.

De Armas decided she wanted to become an actress at the age of 12 after watching Hollywood movies in her neighbor's apartment, as her family did not own a video or DVD player. She joined the Havana National Theatre of Cuba at the age of 14 and filmed three movies in Cuba during this time.

Career

Ana de Armas began her acting career in her native Cuba, appearing in the films "Una rosa de Francia" (2006), "El edén perdido" (2007), and "Madrigal" (2007). While promoting one of the films, she traveled to Spain and met casting agent Juan Lanja, who would go on to represent her in the Spanish market.

At age 18, de Armas relocated to Madrid to pursue broader acting opportunities. Within two weeks of arriving, she met with casting director Luis San Narciso, who had seen her in "Una rosa de Francia" and cast her as Carolina Leal in the teen mystery drama "El Internado."
