Early Life

Jane Elliot was born Jane Stein on January 17, 1947 in New York City. Attracted to performing at an early age, she began taking ballet classes when she was four and singing classes when she was 14.

Career Beginnings on Television

In London on a summer abroad program when she was 17, Elliot won a role in a British television production of "Come Back, Little Sheba." This gained her a membership in British Equity and launched her acting career. Elliot went on to star on the short-lived ABC soap opera "A Time for Us" in 1965. Over the remainder of the decade, she made appearances on such shows as "N.Y.P.D.," "Judd for the Defense," "The Mod Squad," and "CBS Playhouse." In the 1970s, Elliot was in episodes of "Dan August," "The Interns," "Kojak," "Barnaby Jones," and "Once an Eagle," among other series. She also appeared in the television films "Welcome Home, Johnny Bristol" and "The Fabulous Doctor Fable," and had a main role on the short-lived NBC legal drama series "Rosetti and Ryan."

Soap Operas

In 1978, Elliot debuted her most famous role: ruthless socialite Tracy Quartermaine on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital." She quickly became a fan favorite, and has played the character on-and-off ever since. For her work, Elliot won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1981, and received three more nominations over the ensuing decades. In the early 1980s, she also had roles on the CBS primetime soap opera "Knots Landing" and the CBS daytime soap "Guiding Light." On the latter, Elliot played Carrie Todd, a murderer with dissociative identity disorder. Next, from 1984 to 1986, Elliot played home wrecker Cynthia Chandler Preston Cortlandt on the ABC soap opera "All My Children." She followed that by playing another adulterous woman, Anjelica Deveraux, on NBC's "Days of Our Lives" from 1987 to 1989. Elliot received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for her role as Anjelica. In the 1990s, she reprised her "General Hospital" role as Tracy Quartermaine on the new ABC soap opera "The City," which ran from 1995 to 1997.

Further Television Career

Although Elliot mostly focused on soap operas starting in the 1980s, she has made occasional appearances on non-soap shows. In 1982, she was in an episode of the anthology series "CBS Children's Mystery Theatre," and in 1988 she had a guest role on the short-lived NBC sitcom "Baby Boom," based on the film of the same name that she was also in. Elliot's other television credits include two episodes of NBC's "Law & Order," the first in 1998 and the second in 2001.

Film Career

Elliot made her feature film debut in 1969, playing Sister Barbara in the Elvis Presley musical crime drama "Change of Habit." She next appeared in the 1972 drama "One is a Lonely Number," based on Rebecca Morris's short story "The Good Humor Man." After a long break from the big screen, Elliot acted in two films in 1987: the teen romance "Some Kind of Wonderful" and the romantic dramedy "Baby Boom."

Personal Life

In 1979, Elliot married Luis Rojas. They had three children — Adrian, Isiah, and Annie — before divorcing in 1986.
