Early Life
Anggun was born Anggun Cipta Sasmi on April 29, 1974, in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is the daughter of homemaker Dien Herdina (from the Yogyakarta royal family) and Javanese writer Darto Singo. Though she comes from a Muslim family, Anggun's parents sent her to Catholic school to get a better education. She began receiving daily singing lessons at the age of seven, and her father instructed her to write poems with the melodies that could be turned into songs. He also guided her to improve her singing skills with the help of a book that was written by Pranadjaja, a Bina Vokalia vocal coach. Anggun's mother became her manager. She began writing songs at the age of nine, and in 1983, she recorded her debut album, "Kepada Alam dan Pencintanya," which was made up of covers of songs by Ritta Rubby Hartland, an Indonesian country singer. The album wasn't released until the early 1990s, after she became famous.
Career
Anggun released her first commercial album, "Dunia Aku Punya," in 1986, but she didn't find fame until she released the 1989 single "Mimpi," which Rolling Stone later named one of the "150 Greatest Indonesian Songs of All Time." In the early '90s, she had hit singles with "Laba Laba," "Tua Tua Keladi," and "Takut," and around this time, she released the albums "Anak Putih Abu Abu" (1991) and "Nocturno" (1992), and "Anak Putih Abu Abu" earned her a Popular Magazine award for Most Popular Indonesian Artist 1990–1991. In 1992, Anggun married French engineer Michel Georgea, and he later began serving as her manager. In 1993, Anggun founded the record company Bali Cipta Records, making her the youngest Indonesian singer to launch her own record company. That year she released the album "Anggun C. Sasmi… Lah!!!," which featured the hit single "Kembalilah Kasih (Kita Harus Bicara)." Before she turned 20, she had sold more than four million albums in Indonesia. In the mid-1990s, Anggun sold her record company after deciding to move to Europe. She settled in London but didn't have success there, so she moved to France. There, she met popular French singer Florent Pagny in 1996, and he became her mentor. Pagny introduced Anggun to producer Erick Benzi, who was impressed with her, and she soon signed with Sony Music and Columbia France.
After learning French at the Alliance Française, she released her first French-language album, 1997's "Au nom de la lune," and the single "La neige au Sahara" reached #3 on the France Airplay chart. When the single was released in English as "Snow on the Sahara," it topped the charts in Italy and Malaysia. The album has sold more than 1.5 million copies, and "La neige au Sahara" was 1997's most played French-language song. Anggun went on to release the French-language albums "Désirs contraires" (2000), "Luminescence" (2005), "Élévation" (2008), "Échos" (2011), and "Toujours un ailleurs" (2015). She also released those albums in English, and four of them reached #1 in Italy. Five singles from those albums reached #1 in at least one country. In 2017, Anggun released the English-language album "8."
