What is Paul Heaton's Net Worth?

Paul Heaton is an English singer-songwriter who has a net worth of $4 million. Paul Heaton rose to fame in the 1980s as the lead singer and primary lyricist of the rock band the Housemartins, and he continued his success with the pop rock band the Beautiful South in the 1990s. Heaton has also had a solo career, and has recorded multiple albums with fellow former Beautiful South singer Jacqui Abbott.

Early Life

Paul Heaton was born on May 9, 1962 in Bromborough, England to Doris and Horace. He has two older brothers named Mark and Adrian. When Heaton was four years old, he moved with his family to Sheffield. As a teenager, he moved to Chipstead, Surrey, where he formed the bands Tools Down and Stomping Pond Frogs. Instead of going to university, Heaton took some office jobs and then hitchhiked through Europe. In 1983, he moved to Hull.

The Housemartins

After moving to Hull in 1983, Heaton began busking with guitarist Stan Cullimore. The pair subsequently formed the rock band the Housemartins, and eventually recruited bassist Ted Key and drummer Hugh Whitaker. In 1985, Key was replaced by Norman Cook, and in 1986 the Housemartins released their debut album, "London 0 Hull 4." The album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and spawned the hit single "Happy Hour." In late 1986, the Housemartins released an a cappella cover of the Isley-Jasper-Isley song "Caravan of Love," which became their first and only number-one hit in the UK. With new drummer Dave Hemingway, the Housemartins released their second and final studio album, "The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death," in 1987. The most commercially successful single from the album was "Five Get Over Excited." In 1988, the Housemartins disbanded.

The Beautiful South

In 1988, Heaton formed the pop rock group the Beautiful South with his former Housemartins bandmate Dave Hemingway. They were joined by Dave Rotheray on lead guitar, Sean Welch on bass, and David Stead on drums. Heaton and Hemingway both served as lead singers, and Heaton and Rotheray served as the main lyricists. The Beautiful South's debut album, "Welcome to the Beautiful South," came out in 1989 and launched the hit singles "Song for Whoever" and "You Keep It All In." In 1990, the band released the album "Choke," which spawned its only number-one single in the UK, "A Little Time." The Beautiful South's subsequent albums were "0898 Beautiful South" (1992) and "Miaow" (1994).

With its fifth studio album, "Blue is the Colour" (1996), the Beautiful South achieved its first number-one placement on the UK Albums Chart. The album launched the top-ten singles "Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)" and "Don't Marry Her." In 1998, the Beautiful South topped the charts again with the album "Quench," which included the hit single "Perfect 10." The group went on to release the concept album "Painting it Red" in 2000; it reached number two on the UK Albums Chart. That was followed by "Gaze" in 2003 and the cover album "Golddiggas, Headnodders and Pholk Songs" in 2004. The Beautiful South released its tenth and final studio album, "Superbi," in 2006. Early the next year, the band broke up.

Solo Career

Heaton launched his solo career in 2001 with the release of the album "Fat Chance," on which he used the moniker Biscuit Boy. Although praised by critics, it was a commercial flop. Heaton had better success with his second solo album, "The Cross-Eyed Rambler," which came out in the summer of 2008. He released his third solo album, "Acid Country," in 2010. The year after that, Heaton wrote an anthology of songs based on the seven deadly sins, entitled "The 8th," to be sung by eight different singers during the Manchester International Festival. In the summer of 2012, six further performances of the song took place. After spending the ensuing decade performing with Jacqui Abbott, Heaton released his next solo album, "The Mighty Several," in 2024.

Albums with Jacqui Abbott

In 2013, Heaton got back together with his former Beautiful South bandmate Jacqui Abbott to record the album "What Have We Become?" Released in the spring of 2014, it peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. Heaton and Abbott went on to perform at various festivals throughout the UK and Ireland. They subsequently released the album "Wisdom, Laughter and Lines" in 2015 and "Crooked Calypso" in 2017. The fourth studio album by Heaton and Abbott, "Manchester Calling" (2020), became their first to top the UK Albums Chart. In 2022, the duo scored another number-one album with "N.K-Pop."

Personal Life

With his wife Linda, Heaton has three children and resides in Manchester. His hobbies include cycling, drinking, and collecting crisp packets, postcards, and comics.
