Early Life
Beth Ditto was born Mary Beth Patterson on February 19, 1981, in Searcy, Arkansas. She grew up poor with her mother, Velmyra Estel, and six siblings, and she had a few different stepfathers. She took the surname "Ditto" from one of those stepfathers, Homer Ditto. Beth was raised in the Pentecostal and Southern Baptist churches but later became an atheist. When she was 13, she moved in with "her foul-mouthed aunt Jannie." In 1999, she relocated to Olympia, Washington, followed by a move to Portland, Oregon, in 2003.
Career
Ditto formed Gossip with Nathan Howdeshell and Kathy Mendonça in 1999, and they released their debut album, "That's Not What I Heard," in January 2001. They followed it with "Movement" in 2003, and their 2006 album "Standing in the Way of Control" was certified Gold in the U.K. The album's title track also went Gold in the U.K., and it reached #1 on the UK Indie Chart, #7 on the UK Singles Chart, and #9 on the Scottish Singles Chart. Next, Gossip released the 2009 album "Music for Men," which reached the top 10 in Austria, Belgium, France, and Germany. The album was certified 2× Platinum in France and Germany, Platinum in Austria and Switzerland, and Gold in Australia and Belgium. The single "Heavy Cross" was a top 10 hit in several countries, and it was certified Platinum in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. Personal Life
Beth is an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ and feminist causes, and she is an advocate for body positivity. She married Kristin Ogata in July 2013 in Hawaii. The two have been best friends since Ditto was 18. The couple legally married in their home state, Oregon, in December 2014, after same-sex marriage was legalized there. In a March 2018 interview, Beth revealed that she and Kristin had split up and that she was dating Ted Kwo, a transgender musician. The two later became engaged.

In 2006, Ditto was named to NME magazine's " Cool List." In 2007, she earned a Stonewall Award nomination for Hero of the Year, an NME Award nomination for Sexiest Woman of the Year, a Virgin Media Music Award nomination for Legend of the Year, and a PLUG Award nomination for Female Artist of the Year. In 2008, the Glamour Awards named her International Artist of the Year, and in 2017, she received a Gay Music Chart Award nomination for Best Lyric Video for "In and Out."
