Early Life and Education

Cassper Nyovest was born Refiloe Maele Phoolo on December 16, 1990, in Mafikeng, South Africa to Letsebela and Muzuki. He has a sister named Tsholofelo and had a brother named Khotso who passed away in 2003. Nyovest was educated at Sol Plaatjie Secondary School, where he played several sports. In 2007, he dropped out of high school to pursue his music career, and in 2008 relocated to Johannesburg.

Music Career

Nyovest began rapping when he was 12 years old. At the age of 13, he formed the hip hop group Childhood Gangsta with his friends. Nyovest's next group was called Slow Motion. After dropping out of high school, he signed with the record label Impact Sounds, where he remained until a falling out in 2008. Nyovest released his debut single, "Gusheshe," in 2013, and in 2014 he founded the independent record label Family Tree Records. In the latter year, he released his debut studio album, "Tsholofelo," named after his sister. The album was a huge success in South Africa, and in addition to "Gusheshe" featured the hit singles "Doc Shebeleza" and "Phumakim."

Nyovest had a big year in 2015, when he released his second album, "Refiloe," and headlined the sold-out Fill Up the Dome concert at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg. In 2016, he held the Fill Up Orlando Stadium event at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, which also sold out. Nyovest released his third album, "Thuto," in 2017, and later in the year held his third Fill Up event, this time at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. In 2018, he had a hit with his album "Sweet and Short" and headlined his fourth Fill Up event, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Nyovest's fifth annual Fill Up concert was held at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg in late 2019.

Nyovest released his fifth studio album, "A.M.N (Any Minute Now)," in 2020. It features appearances by such artists as Samthing Soweto, Busiswa, Khuli Chana, Towdee Mac, and Nadia Nakai, among others. The album won Album of the Year at the South African Hip Hop Awards, while Nyovest's song "Good for That" won Song of the Year. In 2021, Nyovest released the album "Sweet and Short 2.0," his first album of amapiano music. Later in the year, he toured the United Kingdom. Nyovest's seventh studio album, "Solomon," came out in 2023. That year, he toured with fellow South African rapper Nasty C throughout Africa.

Other Activities

Among his other activities, Nyovest has done endorsements for several brands, with the biggest deal being with Cîroc vodka. He has also endorsed MTN, Samsung, Shoprite, Coca-Cola, Castle Lite, and KFC, among other brands. As an entrepreneur, Nyovest founded the sneaker brand Root of Fame and the liquor brand Billiato, both in 2021. Elsewhere, he has done some amateur boxing, winning against YouTuber Slik Talk in a match in late 2021 and losing to actor and singer NaakMusiQ in a match in Arizona in 2022.

Personal Life

For a while, it was rumored that Nyovest was dating television personality, actress, and rapper Boity Thulo, but both parties denied any romantic relationship. Their partnership was finally confirmed in a July 2015 issue of DRUM magazine. However, the couple broke up by the end of the year.
