What is Mick Fanning's Net Worth?
Mick Fanning is an Australian professional surfer who has a net worth of $8 million. Among his career accomplishments, Mick Fanning won the ASP World Tour in 2007, 2009, and 2013. In addition to his professional achievements, Fanning is known for having survived a shark attack at the J-Bay Open in 2015.
Despite being retired from the sport professionally, he still earns around $2 million per year. Mark has endorsements with companies like Red Bull, Rip Curl, and Mercedes. He was the third-highest-paid surfer in the world in 2018.
Early Life and Education
Mick Fanning was born on June 13, 1981, in Penrith, Australia, to Irish parents. He learned to surf at the age of three, and became more focused on the sport after moving with his family to Tweed Heads when he was 12. Fanning was educated at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School. He had a brother named Sean who was killed in a car accident in 1998.
Professional Career
Fanning scored his first professional victory in 2000, winning the Mark Richards Newcastle City Pro in the World Qualification Series. The following year, he claimed his first win on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour, at Bells Beach, and also won the WQS. In 2002, Fanning won the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay and his second Mark Richards Newcastle City Pro, and ended the year being named Rookie of the Year. He experienced a career hiccup in 2004 due to a hamstring tear, but eventually made his comeback to become one of the leading surfers on the ASP World Tour. In 2005, Fanning won the Rip Curl Pro Search and the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, and in 2006 he won the Nova Schin Festival and his second career Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay. He had his greatest season yet in 2007, when his victories at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, Quiksilver Pro France, and Hang Loose Pro clinched him the ASP World Tour championship. After failing to win any events in 2008, partly due to a midseason groin injury, Fanning roared back in 2009 to win the Hurley Pro Trestles, Rip Curl Pro Search, and Quiksilver Pro France, enough to secure him his second ASP World Tour championship.
In 2010, Fanning won just one ASP World Tour event, the Quiksilver Pro France. This was his third career win at that event. After having no victories in 2011, Fanning won the Billabong Pro Teahupoo and the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in 2012. In 2013, he won his fourth career Quiksilver Pro France and ended the season with his third ASP World Tour championship. The next year, Fanning won the Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal and the J-Bay Open and finished runner-up on the ASP World Tour. He was runner-up again in 2015 after winning his second career Hurley Pro Trestles and fourth career Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Fanning also won the 2015 Vans World Cup in the World Qualification Series. It was during this season that the ASP World Tour was renamed the World Surf League, and also the year that Fanning experienced a shark attack at the J-Bay Open. Following the incident, the event was canceled. Fanning carried on with his professional surfing career and went on to win the J-Bay Open in 2016. In 2024, he was inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame.

Shark Attack
At the 2015 J-Bay Open at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, Fanning was attacked by a shark two minutes into the event final. It was suspected that a great white swam up next to him and became tangled up in his surfboard leash, at which point Fanning punched the shark and attempted to wedge his board between him and the animal. The shark responded by biting off his leash. Fellow competitor Julian Wilson, who was also in the water for the J-Bay Open final, helped Fanning during this incident before a response team arrived. Although neither Fanning nor Wilson were bitten, the International Shark Attack File classified the encounter as a shark attack due to the presence of physical contact between the animal and Fanning.
Business Ventures
In 2016, Fanning and a few other Australian surfers established Balter Brewing Company, a craft brewery, in Currumbin, Queensland. He remained co-owner of the business until it was sold to Carlton & United Breweries in 2019. That year, Fanning invested in the dog food company Scratch.
Personal Life
Fanning was previously married to entrepreneur Karissa Dalton. The pair divorced in 2016 after eight years of marriage. In 2017, Fanning was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to surfing and his charitable endeavors.
