Joseph Mazzello was born on September 21, 1983 in Rhineback, New York to Virginia and Joseph Jr. He was raised in Hyde Park with his siblings John and Mary. Mazzello attended Our Lady of Lourdes High School. For his higher education, he went to the University of Southern California, using a recommendation letter from his "Jurassic Park" director Steven Spielberg. Mazzello graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Film Career

Mazzello made his big-screen debut at the age of six in 1990, with a small part in Alan J. Pakula's legal thriller "Presumed Innocent." He had bigger roles in the 1992 films "Radio Flyer" and "Jersey Girl." Mazzello's breakthrough came in 1993 when he played Tim Murphy in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster science-fiction film "Jurassic Park," starring opposite Ariana Richards as his on-screen sister Lex. Later that year, he portrayed the young Douglas Gresham in the biographical drama "Shadowlands," directed by his "Jurassic Park" co-star Richard Attenborough.

In 1994, Mazzello appeared alongside Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon, and David Strathairn in Curtis Hanson's thriller "The River Wild." The following year, he starred as an HIV-afflicted boy in "The Cure" and played the young Tom Holman in "Three Wishes." After taking a break from the big screen in 1996, Mazzello returned in 1997 with a cameo appearance as Tim Murphy in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." During the decade, he had roles in the television films "Unspeakable Acts," "Desperate Choices: To Save My Child," and "A Father for Charlie." Mazzello began appearing in regular television series in the 21st century, starting with a guest role on NBC's "Providence" in 2002. Over the subsequent two years, he appeared in episodes of the CBS series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Without a Trace." Mazzello had his biggest television role yet in 2010, in the HBO war drama miniseries "The Pacific." He portrayed US Marine Eugene Sledge, a man he had previously played in the 2009 short film "Beyond All Boundaries."

In 2012, Mazzello appeared in the A&E miniseries "Coma," based on Robin Cook's novel and the film adaptation of the same name. Following that, he had a three-episode guest role on FX's neo-Western crime series "Justified" in 2013. The next year, Mazzello was in two episodes of the CBS science-fiction crime series "Person of Interest." He returned to CBS in 2016 with a guest role on the procedural "Elementary."
