What is Frank Vogel's Net Worth and Salary?

Frank Vogel is an American professional basketball coach who has a net worth of $16 million. Frank Vogel began his coaching career with the NBA's Boston Celtics in 2001, and since then has coached such teams as the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and Phoenix Suns. In 2020, Vogel led the Lakers to an NBA championship title.

Phoenix Suns Contract & Payout

Frank Vogel signed a five-year, $31 million contract with the Phoenix Suns in June 2023, earning an average annual salary of approximately $6.2 million. Despite being fired after just one season in May 2024, the deal was fully guaranteed, meaning Vogel will still receive the remainder of the contract—roughly $24 million. This effectively makes his one season with the Suns worth the full $31 million payout.

Early Life and Education

Frank Vogel was born on June 21, 1973 in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. He got his first taste of national fame as a teenager when he was featured on the "Stupid Human Tricks" segment on "Late Night with David Letterman," where he spun a basketball on a toothbrush while brushing his teeth. At the age of 17 in late 1990, Vogel's family house burned down in a fire. The following year, he graduated from Wildwood High School. For his higher education, Vogel first attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where he played Division III basketball. In 1994, he transferred to the University of Kentucky, where he played junior varsity basketball with the Wildcats. Vogel graduated from Kentucky in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Coaching Career

After serving five years as the head video coordinator for the NBA's Boston Celtics, Vogel became the team's assistant coach in 2001. He remained in that position through 2004, and then became assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. Vogel left Philadelphia in 2005 and spent the next couple of years working as an advance scout for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Wizards. In 2007, he became assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers, holding that position until he was promoted to interim coach upon the firing of head coach Jim O'Brien in early 2011. As interim coach, Vogel led the Pacers to their first playoffs appearance in five years. He subsequently became the team's new head coach, and led the Pacers back to the playoffs in 2012. The following season was even more successful, as the Pacers won their first division title in nearly a decade and reached the Eastern Conference finals. There, the team lost to the Miami Heat in seven games. Vogel led the Pacers to a second consecutive Eastern Conference finals in 2014, where the team again lost to the Heat. After missing the playoffs in 2015, the Pacers returned in 2016, but lost to the Toronto Raptors in the first round. Vogel was subsequently let go; he finished his tenure with the Pacers as the franchise's all-time leader in NBA wins.

After leaving the Pacers in 2016, Vogel became the head coach of the Orlando Magic. He served in the position for two seasons, going 54-110 and missing the playoffs in both seasons, before he was fired in 2018. Vogel was subsequently named the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. In his first season with the Lakers, he led the team to a 52-19 record and the NBA championship title. It was the 17th overall NBA title for the Lakers, tying the team with the Boston Celtics for the most ever. In his second season, Vogel led the Lakers to a 42-30 record and an appearance in the first round of the playoffs, where they were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns. Although the Lakers went into the 2021-22 season as conference favorites, they struggled mightily among player injuries and finished with a 33-49 record. Failing to make it to the playoffs, the Lakers fired Vogel. He went on to become the head coach of the Phoenix Suns in 2023, but was fired in May 2024 after one season. Later that year, Vogel was hired as a coaching consultant for Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd.
