Early Life and Education
Finola Hughes was born on October 29, 1959 in Kensington, England. She trained in the performing arts at the Arts Educational Schools in London.
General Hospital and All My Children
Hughes became more widely known in 1985 when she began playing Anna Devane, a criminal superspy, on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital." Her first tenure on the show lasted until 1992, and for her work she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Hughes briefly returned to the show in late 1995 as the spirit of Anna. At the end of the decade, she began playing Anna's twin sister Alex Marick on the ABC soap opera "All My Children"; she played that role until 2001, and then played Anna on "All My Children" from 2001 to 2003. Hughes also re-joined "General Hospital" from 2001 to 2003. She returned again for a stint from 2006 to 2007, and then appeared on the show again in 2008. Also in 2008, Hughes guest-starred on the "General Hospital" spinoff "General Hospital: Night Shift." She would later permanently re-join "General Hospital" in 2012 on contract with the series.
Other Television Roles
In the 1980s, Hughes appeared in the television film "The Master of Ballantrae" and in three episodes of the NBC legal drama series "L.A. Law." Kicking off the 1990s, she was in the ABC television film "The Bride in Black." Hughes had her first non-soap main role on the ABC series "Jack's Place," which ran from 1992 to 1993. She subsequently played Carol Russo in the final two seasons of the NBC sitcom "Blossom" and appeared in the HBO television film "Above Suspicion." Hughes then starred in the 1996 Fox television film "Generation X," based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name. In 1997, she had a main role on Fox's short-lived primetime soap opera "Pacific Palisades," appeared in three episodes of the NBC soap opera "Sunset Beach," and starred in the television film "Prison of Secrets."
In 1998, Hughes had a guest role on "The Love Boat: The Next Wave" and began playing the recurring role of Patty Halliwell on the fantasy drama series "Charmed." Film Career
Hughes had her first credited film role in the 1982 British film "Nutcracker." Her Hollywood breakthrough came the next year when she starred opposite John Travolta in the "Saturday Night Fever" sequel "Staying Alive." Hughes didn't appear much on the big screen during the rest of the decade. She was more prolific in the 1990s, starting with a brief appearance in the comedy "Soapdish" and continuing with a supporting role opposite Paul Gross and Peter Berg in the drama "Aspen Extreme." Later in the decade, Hughes voiced Queen Anne in Disney's direct-to-video "Pocahontas" sequel "Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World," and starred in the direct-to-video science-fiction film "Tycus." Commencing the new millennium, she starred in the action film "Intrepid." Hughes has mostly focused on television since then, although she did have a supporting part in the 2011 romantic drama "Like Crazy." In 2013, she branched out into directing with the film "The Bet"; she went on to direct another film, the romcom "Byrd and the Bees," in 2017.
Personal Life
In 1992, Hughes married visual artist Russell Young. They had three children together and eventually divorced in 2021.
