Early Life and Education
Albert von Thurn und Taxis was born on June 24, 1983 in Regensburg, Germany to businessman Johannes and his socialite wife Gloria, who was 33 years his junior. He has two older sisters named Maria and Elisabeth. They are all members of the noble House of Thurn and Taxis, which was led by Johannes from 1982 until his death. As descendants of King Miguel I of Portugal, Albert and his sisters are also related to a number of reigning hereditary heads of state in Europe. Upon the death of his father in 1990, Albert became the world's youngest billionaire when he inherited $3 billion (as well as $500 million in debt) and became the 12th Prince of Thurn and Taxis. His mother played a critical role in maintaining the family fortune until he was able to take over its management when he reached legal age.
After earning his high school degree in Rome, Albert did his military service. He went on to study economics and theology at the University of Edinburgh. Much later, Albert returned to Rome and attended graduate school at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, where he earned a doctorate in philosophy in 2022. His dissertation was entitled "Rational Nature or Wishful Thinking? Freedom & Rationality in Aquinas and Their Medieval Critique."
