Description

This is just Part 2 of a Story/Gameplay video of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom On the PS1. This vid continues a little bit of the gameplay at the end of the first vid, but is mostly story elements after that. I just got this game for $5 at my local Play N Trade. I rented it back in the PS1 days, and have wanted it ever since. This was my introduction to the popular Wing Commander series. The game starring Mark Hamill, is essentially an interactive movie/Space Combat game. A lot of the early uses of Full Motion Video were big experiments that really didn't have much to their gameplay. Most of them played like Dragon's Lair. This game was a great example of how to integrate FMV into the gameplay to not only tell a story (of which the character has some control over the plot turns), but to integrate FMV into the gameplay. This series has a big cult following (mostly amongst PC games), and for it's time Wing Commander IV was the most expensive game ever made with an estimated 12 million dollar budget which was huge for it's time. This game integrates plot into the gameplay the right way IMO. I always say Gameplay is way more important than story, but when they integrate gameplay elements into the story, it makes the story part of the gameplay. It doesn't go as in-depth as it could be, but it's definitely better than just simply watching a cutscene. Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is now available on the US PlayStation Store. Here's an interesting read about the game:
