Chris Evert returned to the scene of her most comprehensive career win over Martina Navratilova, where she didn't lose a game in the 1981 final. This time she was facing a new challenge from a player who beat her twice earlier in the year, first in Oakland indoors, then at the Family Circle Cup, where she had never lost a match. But after a hard fought first set, Chris steamrolled in similar fashion to the previous year, winning the last 24 of 25 points of the match, to win 6-3 6-1 over 16-year-old phenom Andrea Jaeger.
