North Ogden City Parade Cherry Days 2010 Safety is No Accident

Description

What will it take for those attending the Cherry Days Parade in North Ogden, Utah to enjoy it? Kids run into the streets after Semi Trucks, Tractors, Golf Carts, Boats and Motorcycles like the running of the bulls in Spain. Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden and many other cities across the US have adopted strict rules about crossing the lines set up at parades for Safety. Please stop throwing candy from moving vehicles! Throwing candy from a parade float or entry is simply irresponsible and will lead to an accident. If Jason Child one of North Ogden's best Police Officers can write over 2,000 tickets a year North Ogden City can surely stop the throwing of candy from 50 moving vehicles at this historic event. What is it going to take? Do we need Jason Child to start the parade and visit with each entry before they go down the hill? It would be worth it. Please not let another year pass with this kind of liability. The suggestion I am making is not throwing it from a moving vehicle and not banning it. It would be great to have someone from each entry walking along the parade route and get some candy airborne for the kids. This is a plain and simple solution to keep the kids from running up to moving tires bigger than them for candy. My heart goes out to the kid hit and his family. I hope he makes a quick and full recovery. 3/3/2011 I feel that the city has listened to the residents of North Ogden, the National Cities and Towns Insurance Guidelines, and common sense. When I moved to North Ogden in 1987, North Ogden City painted a slogan above the public works building and it reads, "Safety is No Accident." I appreciate the mayor and council who took the time to watch the footage, study the circumstances surrounding the parade, and make the right decision. The city has decided to make the parade fun and safe at the same time. Candy will be distributed along the parade route next to the curb while keeping the parade watchers safe from a variety of parade entries. It is my opinion that North Ogden has lost many entries due to the crowds in the street. Entries that make turns and go back and forth were not able to enter until now. The lane of travel for the parade was limited from six lanes to one as the crowd would move farther into the lanes of traffic and thicken. With the newly adopted parade guidelines, safety and fun can be had by all. Respectfully, Robert Bolar
