Trama: Le prime scene incominciano già con delle inquadrature drammatiche: il litigio del figlio con il padre molto ostinato e che non concede la proprietà al figlio per la ristrutturazione delle stessa con aggiunta di altri animali per l'allevamento e la produzione di latte. Il figlio adirato sta per colpire il padre ma all'improvviso si rende conto del gesto e si allontana con la propria famiglia dalla baita di montagna. Dopo otto anni, Heidi perde i genitori e viene affidata allo scontroso nonno, che si è ritirato sui monti. Subito Heidi fa amicizia con Peter, il giovane guardiano delle capre e con sua nonna cieca. L'orfanella comincia ad ambientarsi nella casa del nonno e a entusiasmarsi per la vita sui monti. Ma il duro carattere del vecchio va peggiorando e perciò la cugina Dete torna a riprendersi la bimba per condurla a Francoforte, presso la famiglia Sesemann. Qui dovrà fare compagnia al Klara, una ragazzina costretta sulla sedia a rotelle. L'arrivo di Heidi nella casa dei Sesemann è accolto con entusiasmo da Klara e con disappunto dalla governante, la signorina Rottermeier.
