Game #17: vs. Lawrence (hit the "Show more" button below) May 21, 2009 WASHBURN RURAL 2 LAWRENCE 0 For the fourth consecutive season, the Lady Blues of Washburn Rural advanced to the Class 6A quarterfinals after a 2-0 home victory over Lawrence last night. It is the third year in a row that Rural has defeated Lawrence in the regional final and this year's game was probably the Lady Blues' best performance of the bunch. In the opening half, Rural was able to limit Lawrence's offensive opportunities by winning balls in the middle of the field and keeping the Lions' defense backed up in their own end of the field. Despite the consistent pressure, the Lady Blues were unable to find the back of the net in the first half. Rural had a few close chances including a ball that Taylor Boles redirected just wide of the goal and a Whitney Peavler breakaway that narrowly missed. Lawrence also did a nice job stopping many of Rural's advances and limited the Lady Blues to just one corner kick in the opening 40 minutes. In the second half, the first 20 minutes were back and forth and Lawrence had their best chances of the night. But Rural's defense, which was outstanding all night, was able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. With 16 minutes remaining, the Lady Blues finally got on the board when Jenna Carrier hit a left-footed cross through the box that found the feet of Sarah Hayden who slammed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead! The Lady Blues put the game away with less than four minutes left when Peavler made her way down the right sideline and slid a ball across the box that the Lions' keeper had trouble controlling. Brandy Biswell controlled the loose ball and laid a nice pass back to Hilary Johnson who hit the ball into the upper right corner to give the Lady Blues a 2-0 lead they would hold until the end of the game!
