A war veteran, naval captain, prisoner of war, victim of torture, McCain has been a US senator from Arizona since 1987, as well as the Republican nominee for president in 2008. After he graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1958, he had a 22-year military career as a pilot and officer in the Navy. Five years of his military time, from 1967 to 1973, McCain had spent as a North Vietnamese prisoner after he was shot down over Hanoi during the Vietnam War. He left the Navy in 1981, while a year later he entered into politics as he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982.
