He won the Kentucky U.S. Senate seat in 1984 by a thin margin, representing the Republican party. He was re-elected in 1990, 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014. Since 2007 McConnell has been the Minority Leader of the Senate. He is the longest serving United States Senator in the history of Kentucky. He currently serves as the Senator with the 7th most seniority, as well as 4th most among Republican Senators. He is married to former Secretary of Labor under George W. Bush Elaine Chao. He was formerly married to Sherrill Redmon, with whom he had three daughters. In 2010 McConnell was listed as the 10th wealthiest member of the U.S. Senate.
