He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Oral Roberts University in 1998. He started what is now World Changers Church International in College Park, Georgia, near Atlanta, in 1986 with eight people worshiping in a school cafeteria. In 2007, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley named him and other evangelists in a financial investigation, citing lavish lifestyles and questioning their use of money collected from churchgoers and viewers.
