Early Life

Jay Mohr was born Jon Ferguson Mohr on August 23, 1970, in Verona, New Jersey. His mother, Jean, was a nurse, and his father, Jon, worked as a marketing executive. Jay and his sisters,  Virginia and Julia, grew up in a Presbyterian household, but Mohr converted to Catholicism in 2008. Jay attended Verona High School, where he served as captain of the wrestling team, and he graduated in 1988. Mohr is a cousin of Conan O'Brien, and he appeared as a guest on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" numerous times.

Career

In 1992, Mohr was hired to host the MTV game show "Lip Service" and was cast as a series regular on ABC's "Camp Wilder." From 1993 to 1995, he was a featured player on the NBC sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live," and in 1996, he played sports agent Bob Sugar opposite Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire," which grossed $273.6 million at the box office. That year he also had recurring roles on "The Jeff Foxworthy Show" and "Local Heroes."

In 1997, Jay co-starred with Jennifer Aniston in "Picture Perfect." That same year he starred in "Suicide Kings" along with Christopher Walken (Mohr famously has one of the best Walken impersonation), Denis Leary, Sean Patrick Flanery, Johnny Galecki, and Jeremy Sisto.

In 1998, he appeared in the Emmy-winning miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon" as well as the films "Small Soldiers," "Jane Austen's Mafia!," and "Playing by Heart."

In 1999, Jay got his own show, the dark comedy "Action," and he appeared in the films "200 Cigarettes" and "Go." Mohr then appeared in "Cherry Falls" (2000), "Pay It Forward" (2000), "Speaking of Sex" (2001), "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" (2002), and "Seeing Other People" (2004), and he hosted the ESPN talk show "Mohr Sports" in 2001. Mohr appeared in the 2005 films "Are We There Yet?" and "King's Ransom," then he played Professor Rick Payne in 33 episodes of "Ghost Whisperer" from 2006 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he played the title role on "Gary Unmarried," which aired 37 episodes over two seasons. While starring on "Gary Unmarried," Jay guest-starred on "Monk" (2009), appeared in the film "Lonely Street," and lent his voice to the video games "Blitz: The League II" (2008), "Saints Row 2" (2008), and "Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust" (2009). In 2010, he appeared in the Clint Eastwood-directed film "Hereafter," and from 2011 to 2013, he had a recurring role as Steven Royce on ABC's "Suburgatory." Mohr co-starred with Steve Carell and Jim Carrey in 2013's "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," then he appeared in the films "Dumbbells" (2014), "Road Hard" (2015), "All About Nina" (2018), "American Nightmares" (2018), and "Hollow Point" (2019).

Jay starred in the stand-up comedy special "Funny for a Girl" in 2012, followed by "Happy. And a Lot." in 2015 and "American Treasure" in 2020. He hosted the 2013 game show "Money Where Your Mouth Is," and in 2016, he hosted the Los Angeles Rams pregame show on KABC-TV. Mohr guest-starred on "American Housewife" in 2017 and 2019 and "The Mick" in 2018, and in 2021, he appeared on an episode of "Ghost Adventures" that took place at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. Personal Life

Jay married model/actress Nicole Chamberlain on November 7, 1998, and they had a son, Jackson (born in 2002), before divorcing in 2005.

Jay Mohr met actress Nikki Cox when he filmed a guest-starring role on the NBC series "Las Vegas" in 2004. They began dating and married on December 29, 2006. Jay and Nikki welcomed son Meredith Daniel on May 5, 2011. In 2008, Jay filed paperwork to have his name legally changed to Jon Ferguson Cox Mohr. Nikki wrote Jay's Grammy-nominated comedy album/special "Happy. And a Lot.," and the couple donated some of the proceeds from digital sales of the album to WriteGirl, a Los Angeles-based organization that "promotes creativity and self-expression to empower girls" by mentoring them in creative writing.

Mohr filed for divorce from Cox in July 2016, then called it off less than a week later. He filed for divorce again in December 2016, stating, "Based upon the increasing hostility in our home, Nikki's ongoing refusal to attend her mental health issues … her abuse of drugs, and her failure to respect boundaries, I had no choice but to obtain alternate housing for me and our son." The divorce was finalized in August 2018.

After dating quietly for several years, in December 2021 Jay became engaged to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. They married in Malibu in September 2023.

In 2000, Mohr won a Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Series, Comedy or Musical for "Action." He received a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album for "Happy. And a Lot." in 2016, and "Last Comic Standing" earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program in 2004. Jay received Online Film & Television Association nominations for "Action" (Best Actor in a New Comedy Series) and "Last Comic Standing" (Best Host of a Game, Competition or Reality Show), and Mohr and his "The Journeyman" castmates earned a Best Acting Ensemble nomination at the 2019 Indie Short Fest. In 1999, Jay and his "Go" co-star Scott Wolf received a Teen Choice Award nomination for Film – Funniest Scene.

Real Estate

After their divorce, Mohr and Cox sold their 3,777 square foot Pacific Palisades home for $3.8 million in August 2018. According to property records, they bought the four-bedroom, five-bathroom home for $1.245 million through a trust in 2011.
