Vaughn was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1970. He has two sisters, Victoria and Valeri. His family moved to Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and then to Forest Lake, Illinois. Vaughn attended Lake Forest High School in 1988. In his youth he played quite a bit of baseball, football and spent some time in wrestling, but claims that athletics just wasn't his strong suit. According to some, Vaughn was quite the cut up in class. He was always making his classmates laugh or pulling some silly prank. His biggest inspiration in his life was his mother, Sharon Eileen (nee Palmo.) She had determination and drive, which helped her to overcome many obstacles in her life. Bloomberg Wealth Manager magazine once rated Vaughn's mother as one of the country's top money managers. Vaughn grew up believing that hard work can eventually pay off. As well it did for this talented actor.

The tabloids printed stories that caused problems for Vaughn and actress Jennifer Aniston, (who were dating at the time). They claimed that Vaughn wasn't being faithful to Aniston. In 2006, the couple broke up and are now just good friends. He is now happily married to Kyla Weber (a realtor), and has been since January of 2010. They have a daughter, Lochlyn Kyla Vaughn, born in December of 2010.
