Michael was a liberal arts major at Temple University in Philadelphia. He started modeling for GQ and photographer Bruce Weber even paid for him to take acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan, New York. Michael was a collegiate wrestler and won a gold medal for the United States as a member of the National Junior Wrestling Team in 1978. His film debut came uncredited in the 1984 film Racing with the Moon. The same year Michael starred as Jake Ryan in the movie Sixteen Candles. In 1985 he starred as Kuch in the movie Vision Quest and as Matt in Sylvester. In 1986 he starred in the films Belizaire the Cajun as Hypolite Leger and Let's Get Harry as Corey Burck. In 1989 he starred as Jan in Slaves of New York and as Michael in Longtime Companion. Schoeffling starred as Joe in the 1990 movie Mermaids and his last appearance came starring as Al Carver in the 1991 film Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken. He retired due to a lack of roles and having a family to feed. He went on to own a woodworking shop and produce handcrafted furniture. Michael married former model Valerie L. Robinson and the couple has two children.
