John Malkovich has appeared in more than 80 films since his big screen debut in 1984's "Places in the Heart," and he received Academy Award nominations for his work in that film and "In the Line of Fire" (1993). John has appeared in commercially successful films such as "Empire of the Sun" (1987), "The Man in the Iron Mask" (1998), "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (2005), "Burn After Reading" (2008), and "Warm Bodies" (2013).

Early Life

John Malkovich was born John Gavin Malkovich on December 9, 1953, in Christopher, Illinois. His mother, Joe Anne, owned "Outdoor Illinois" magazine and the weekly newspaper "Benton Evening News," and his father, Daniel, worked as a state conservation director. John and his siblings, Danny, Melissa, Amanda, and Rebecca, were raised in Benton, Illinois; sadly, John and Melissa are the only surviving members of the family as of this writing. Malkovich attended Benton Consolidated High School, and during his teenage years, he performed in plays and joined a folk gospel group. After graduation, he briefly attended Eastern Illinois University before transferring to Illinois State University. John dropped out of college in 1976 to work at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, and he took acting classes at Manhattan's William Esper Studio.

Career

In 1980, Malkovich moved to New York City to star in a Steppenwolf production of "True West," and he earned an Obie Award for his performance. He won another Obie Award (as well as a Drama Desk Award) in 1984 for directing a Steppenwolf co-production of "Balm in Gilead," and he also debuted on Broadway that year as Biff in "Death of a Salesman." In 1985, John received an Emmy for a CBS television adaptation of the play, and he soon appeared in the films "The Glass Menagerie" (1987) and "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988). Throughout the 1980s, he appeared in numerous television films, such as "Word of Honor" (1981), "Say Goodnight, Gracie" (1983), and "True West" (1984), and he hosted "Saturday Night Live" for the first time in 1989 (he would host again in 1993 and 2008). Malkovich starred in 20 films in the 1990s, playing Lennie Small in "Of Mice and Men" (1992), Gilbert Osmond in "The Portrait of a Lady" (1996), General Timms in "Mulholland Falls" (1996), and Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom in "Con Air" (1997). In 1999, he starred in the critically-acclaimed film "Being John Malkovich," which critic Roger Ebert named the best movie of the year. John played himself again in 2003's "Adaptation."

Personal Life

Malkovich married actress Glenne Headly in 1982. They divorced in 1988 as a result of John's affair with Michelle Pfeiffer. He began a relationship with Nicoletta Peyran in 1989, and they have two children, daughter Amandine and son Loewy.

Malkovich lived in France for nearly a decade and is fluent in French, and he co-owns the restaurant Bica do Sapato and nightclub Lux in Lisbon, Portugal.

John lost $2.2 million in the 2008 Bernie Madoff investment scandal and was only awarded $670,000 by the trustees who were responsible for liquidating Madoff's firm.

In 2013, Malkovich witnessed 77-year-old Jim Walpole trip and accidentally slash his throat on some scaffolding in Toronto, and John applied pressure to the man's neck to get the bleeding under control until an ambulance arrived. Walpole later said that Malkovich saved his life, and his wife, Marilyn, stated "He was so in control and knew exactly what to do…I thought he was a doctor."

In 1984, Malkovich's performance in "Places in the Heart" earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Boston Society of Film Critics Award, National Society of Film Critics Award, Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award, and National Board of Review Award. That year, he also won a Boston Society of Film Critics Award and National Society of Film Critics Award for "The Killing Fields," and the following year he received a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for "Death of a Salesman." John won a New York Film Critics Circle Award and American Comedy Award for "Being John Malkovich," and he earned a St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association Award for "Burn After Reading." John was honored with a Capri Legend Award in 2007 and a Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award (San Sebastián International Film Festival) in 1998, and he received a Special Prize for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema at the 2009 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and a Belgrade Victor for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema at the 2020 FEST International Film Festival.
